2)
Blood Pressure Monitoring Directions and Resources

Monitoring your blood pressure at home can be helpful, particularly if you are on any medication that can increase your blood pressure (i.e. phentermine, diethlypropion, phendimetrizine, or Qsymia).  Weight loss can also improve blood pressure and even cause blood pressure to get too low requiring us to reduce the dosages of your blood pressure medications.

For blood pressure monitoring, this can be performed via the following options:

        •   Healthcare Facilities:  if you have had your blood pressure measured in a healthcare facility in the last 2 weeks
then please ask your provider to fax a copy to us at fax: (804) 726-1501

        •
Pharmacy / Blood Pressure Kiosks: many local pharmacies/ grocery stores have blood pressure monitoring stations.                                               A popular blood pressure station brand is called "HIGI" and is available locally for free at many       Publix, Krogers, Walgreens, Wegmans, Sam's usually located near the pharmacy or store front

           Home Blood Pressure Monitor:

When obtaining a home blood pressure reading, please use the following technique as recommended by
the American Heart Association (see link here): Instructions for "Monitoring Your Blood Pressure at Home"

                              •  Be Still.  Don't smoke, drink caffeinated beverages, or exercise within 30 minutes before measuring your
blood pressure.  Empty your bladder and ensure at least 5 minutes of quiet rest before measurements.

                             •  Sit Correctly.  Sit in a firm chair with your back straight and supported. Your feet should be flat on the floor and
your legs should not be crossed.

For a traditional upper arm cuff:
your arm should be supported on a flat surface (such as a table) with
your upper arm at the level of your heart.  Make sure the bottom of the cuff is placed directly above the
                                              bend of your elbow.

For a wrist cuff: apply the wrist device.  Keep your elbow on a table or desk with your forearm bent.
Place your wrist up at the level of your heart.  Keep your arm relaxed and your hand resting against
your body.  Measure your wrist blood pressure without moving your arm while in the seated position.
Click this link to the AMA (American Medical Association) on using a wrist cuff and proper positioning.

                              •  Take multiple readings and record the results. Each time you measure, take 2 readings one minute apart
and record the results.  Please also record your heart rate / pulse if it is displayed on the monitor.

                              •  Don't take the measurement over clothes
