6 Week Fast Track (VLCD)

While most patients see us on a once-monthly basis to focus on steady, persistent weight loss (see "
Our Services"), some patients are better served by a more aggressive, intensive, very low calorie weekly program to cause more rapid weight loss. This is called a very low calorie diet (VLCD) or "medically supervised diet."  A VLCD is a "jump start" to more rapid weight loss after which you would transition to regular food to continue your weight reduction.  This is an effective tool specifically for patients who are looking to lose in a more rapid but safe manner.  We offer a 6 week limited VLCD full meal replacement plan as an option to "Jump Start" weight loss prior to the more traditional nutrition and food counseling

If you are interested in the Fast Track (VLCD) Program please review the Consent and Cost Forms at the bottom of this web page.

6 Week Medically Supervised Diet:  Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) Meal Replacements

A very low calorie diet (VLCD) is a medically supervised diet program where patients consume 800 - 1000 calories per day.
Intake of less than 1000 calories per day is not recommended without close medical supervision and monitoring.

Low calorie but balanced meal replacements (such as bars, shakes, or soups) are provided to replace all meals during the active weight loss phase (6 weeks) during which time patients have rapid weight loss.  We provide the Optifast meal replacements during this 6 week low calorie phase to ensure that the very low calories (800 calories) still provide to your body the adequate amounts of protein, carbohydrate, fat, minerals, and vitamins.

Who Might Consider a 6 week VLCD?

A VLCD diet program is an aggressive weight management program designed for severely overweight people or for people who are looking to lose a large amount of weight quickly and safely.  Most patients who enroll in a VLCD program have attempted other diets.  You might consider this program if:

you are seeking to lose a significant amount of weight in a more rapid manner,
you are looking to lose weight in a fast, effective, and safe manner,
    •  your weight is causing significant health problems (diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, joint problems, other)
    •  previous attempts of diet and weight loss have not been effective,
    •  you need to lose weight prior to (or after) having KNEE SURGERY,
    •  you are considering bariatric surgery but undecided, or your insurance does not cover surgery,
you have previously had bariatric surgery but have regained your weight

How much weight loss can be expected?

Using a VLCD program, you can expect 3-5 pounds of weight loss per week.  In a typical 6 week period, weight loss of 20-30 pounds can be achieved (usually depending on your baseline weight).  If more (or less) weight loss is required, the length and duration of the active weight loss phase of the program may be extended (or reduced).

How does the full meal replacement program work?

The 6 Week Fast Track meal replacement plan works in 2 stages:

Active Weight Loss The 6 Week Fast Track phase typically lasts for 6 weeks but the duraction can be adjusted by you
and your healthcare provider.  During this aggressive phase of weight loss, all calorie intake is taken through well balanced
meal replacements including 5 bars, shakes, or soups per day to drop your calorie intake to 800 calories per day.  Meal
replacements are required to still obtain adequate nutrition at such a low calorie level.  If needed, appetite suppressants
can be used to help reduce hunger and cravings during this active weight loss phase.  You will be seen weekly in the office.

Ongoing Weight Control / Maintenance:  Upon completing the 6 weeks meal replacements, you will have lost a significant
amount of weight.  However, the most important and most difficult part of the process begins here.  Some people say
"losing weight is easy ... it's keeping it off that is the hard part" ... we know that
BOTH "losing weight" AND "keeping it off" are
both very difficult.  For ongoing weight control and maintenance, we arrange your follow up in our more traditional non-VLCD
regular clinic practice which is typically a once a month visit with Dr. Sicat initially, then spaced out further based on progress.

Why use meal replacements?

Consistently reducing to less than 1000 calories per day can be dangerous and should be done under the care of a physician or healthcare provider, especially if you have any conditions such as diabetes or blood pressure, or if take any medications.  It is very difficult to achieve the proper balance of nutrients when taking such low calorie levels, and an imbalance of nutrients can lead to complications and side effects.

Meal replacements are usually used during a VLCD (very low calorie diet) because by taking the exact 800 calories prescribed through these specific food products, the nutritional needs are supplied and balanced.

A very limited variety of bars, shakes, and soups are used with very "plain" flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.
Keeping the available options limited and simple helps reduce cravings by a concept of "stimuli narrowing" and reduces the need to make food choices.

The concept of "stimuli narrowing" is that the less involvement and fewer available choices with food... the better.  This can help break some people's unhealthy relationship with food.  When fewer and simpler options are available, commonly there is less craving or yearning for more (i.e. the opposite of an all-you-can-eat buffet).  Some describe this as a "vacation from food" and you can consider it a "reboot of nutrition"

The Optifast meal replacement products use precise portion control, stimuli narrowing, and high protein, low carbohydrate formulas to help you lose fat while conserving muscle mass and avoiding cravings and hunger.
